How to Add Your Site

1. Check if you need to Create a Chart First
Some categories such as Music and Artists are designed to have one (and only one) chart devoted to each Thing (in this case, band or artist). If your site is about a band or artist which isn't yet listed, you should add the band/artist then add your site to that new chart. This way, your band/artist can be ranked against all the others. Pretty cool huh! There may be other categories which work like this.

2. Find the Right Chart and Click 'Add Your Site'
When you have found the Chart you want to join click on 'Add Your Site' on the right hand side near 'Get Involved'. If there is no 'Add Your Site' then this is a category which is only for other charts. Navigate the Sub-Categories and Listings in the category to find a Chart you can join. Of course, you can always start your own chart.

3. Follow the Instructions and Fill in Your Site Listing Details

4. Copy the Voting HTML snippets and put them on Your Site
You can currently choose from an applet, a GIF image or a simple link. Put these on your site so that visitors can vote for you.

5. Watch your Site Climb the Charts :)

Participation Rules

1. You may not present misleading information to voters.
This means that you can't provide any false information on your site that may have the effect of increasing the number of votes for your site. This includes blind linking or any other form of deception.

2. Cheating
Attempting to exploit or find a way of fooling our system into counting invalid votes is cheating. Whether successful or not, offenders will be barred from participation.

3. You may not offer rewards or inducements to voters.
This means you can't offer prizes or gifts of any kind in return for votes for your site or band. ChartCentral may offer prizes to voters from time to time which you may display on your site.

4. Popup Windows
Voting Forms, Buttons and Links may not appear in a popup window. All voting links must be directed to a full sized browser window with all navigation features enabled. Sites with excessive use of popup windows (more than 2 popups) may not participate in the charts. The link you provide for your site must be to a page with no more than one popup window.

5. Changes
ChartCentral reserve the right to alter these rules and to change the manner in which the votes are collated and the manner in which the charts are calculated at any time without notice. ChartCentral will strive to keep participating webmasters informed of any significant changes to the charts system.

How Votes and Chart Positions are Calculated

1. Vote Counting
Votes are collated each week on Wednesday at 9.00pm EDT (East Coast USA Time). They are sorted into groups which our software identifies as being likely to be the same person. The number of groups voting for each site and chart is then counted and added to the database. This means that visitors can only vote 1 time per week for your site. Although this generally prevents cheating, we also manually check the logs from time to time.

2. Chart Positions
Sites within a chart are ranked by the number of unique votes they reveive each week. If any sites have the same number of votes then it comes down to the number of times visitors to those sites have viewed any of the voting graphics. If there is still a tie, the site with the high average number of votes per week goes first. After that, the site which registered first will be listed higher.

3. Category Rankings and Sub Listings
Often charts are ranked against each other in a category. The same basic rules apply except that the number of sites in the chart is the second criteria after votes. Usually some sites from that chart will be listed under a sub heading. The sites which get listed are ones with the highest rank that together account for more than a set percentage of the votes. This percentage depends on the ranking of the chart and there is also a limit on absolute number of Sub Listings a chart can have. The specific numbers are
RankThresholdMax sub listings
180%8
1-1065%6
>1050%4

4. Star Ranking
In addition to a chart position each site gets a star ranking which is shown on the graphics voting elements. This is a general ranking of the site's popularity compared with all the others on ChartCentral. To work out the star rank we basically scale the number of standard deviations from the mean of the inverted logarithm of the number of votes, to ensure that the number 1 sites gets 5 stars and so on. Simple really.
